Somersault & It Bends – Back Again [Madtech]
Release Date: 22nd May 2020
1) Back Again (Sparkling Version)
2) Back Again (Red Version)
Kerri Chandler’s esteemed Madtech Records imprint has taken on many sonic personas of the years, but its current inclination has to be our favourite so far. Focussing on deep, melody-rich underground house from lesser-known artists; the label’s recent releases have sparked a new lease of life into the UK scene and further afield.
The latest release comes from the combination of Melbourne-based artist Somersault and fellow Australian vocalist, It Bends. ‘Back Again’ contains two versions, both driven by an amazingly compelling vocal topline.
The ‘Sparkling Version’ falls into the loosely swung and stripped-back category that we have been enjoying from the label, with a clean and weighty e-bass melody meeting a shuffled groove and rippled synth stabs throughout.
In a more telling flip, the ‘Red Version’ leans into the world of Two-step and chilled House, oozing serene energy – with long, sweeping notes and the bleeding out of instruments into the reverberated distance. A beautifully constructed alternative to its predecessor.
